*Updated September 22nd, 2021 – Instagram has recently announced it is better to leave hashtags in your caption.

You can still hide your hashtags if you want to have a cleaner-looking post, but they’ve come right out and said that hashtags are more effective left in the caption.

The following post was written before this announcement was made. Platforms change. It’s always best to make sure your information is up to date with best practices*.

Why Hide Your Instagram Hashtags in The First Comment?

Well, hashtags are a HUGE source of engagement on “The Gram”. If you aren’t using them, get on it! They really do make a big difference in how you get found and they are proven to help engage more readers.

Having said that, they can be a little ugly and distract from your perfectly crafted caption. And it’s no secret that Instagram is all about looks. You want your posts to be beautiful and eye-catching.

To get around the cluttered, sometimes spammy look of hashtags, lots of Instagrammers are scheduling their posts, then going in and adding hashtags manually to the first comment. But what happens if you’re busy when the post goes live? Or you just plain forget? You could miss out on all that juicy hashtag traffic!

Solution = Tailwind! Their new feature is here to help make your scheduled Instagram posts as pretty as they can be.

How it’s done

Tailwind has now added a super simple (but super genius) way to easily hide those powerful Instagram hashtags in your first comment. So your hashtags will still register and be linked to your post and do what they’re supposed to do.

But your caption will be left alone to stand out and do its thing. Your post will look clean and professional.

It’s as easy as checking a little box. Follow these simple steps:

1. Upload your photo to Tailwind
2. Write your awesome caption
3. Choose the best hashtags for your post using the Hashtag Finder Tool 2.0
(Not using the hashtag tool yet?? What?! Learn why you should try it HERE)
4. Click the little box “post hashtags in first comment”
5. Click “Add to Queue” and Tailwind will schedule your post for the best time to reach your audience.
6. That’s it!

Check it out in action, below:

NOTE: You can still use conversational hashtags within your caption.
Caption example: “I love using #Tailwind to schedule all my social media posts!”
Only the hashtags you add at the END of your post will be moved to your first comment.

That’s Not All!

There’s another awesome, new feature! It was frequently requested and Tailwind delivered. They now support video auto posting for Instagram business accounts.  Head over to your Tailwind dashboard and upload a video.

Again, simply add your caption, hashtags, and schedule it for the best time. All Tailwind asks is that you make sure the video is in the right aspect ratio. Learn more about video posting and how to upload your video in the correct size HERE.
